If you follow the tech gadget world as much as I do you have no doubt noticed the smartphone is quickly becoming a must have. It all started with the Blackberry which was the first device to efficiently marry an address book, email and a cell phone all in one unit. Blackberry's have been around for almost 9 years and it now seems as though the smartphone market has really taken off.

Let's face it the IPhone changed everything, it is far and away the greatest technological advancement in the last two years. The IPhone was really like looking into the future two years or more. It really is more of a computer rather than a smartphone and because of this many companies RIM (The owners of Blackberry) included are now scrambling to offer something similar. The question is will anyone match up to the IPhone or will they eventually own the market.

Here are two things and only two that I see going against Apple. First is the keyboard on the IPhone it's all touch screen and I don't care how much you love your IPhone it doesn't type as well as a smartphone with a click able keyboard. The second and I believe the most important is the price!

Most of the developed world is now using cell phones to communicate. My grandparents and all of their friends now have cell phones so I have to think the numbers are quite high. The only areas left to grow the cell business are developing countries and these citizens don't have $600 USD to shell out for a phone which is the current cost of an IPhone. If Apple or any other smartphone manufacturer really wants to grow their business they need to make much cheaper versions of these phones. I truly see this as a key!

The mobile business as it relates to internet usage is going to grow dramatically over the next 5 years and will overtake standard personal computer internet access. Most of the citizens in developing nations may never use a traditional computer to surf the web.

There is a ton of business available in these markets and while the average incomes are quite small compared with the US for example the massive amount of volume will convert into huge amounts of revenue.

So Mr. Steve Jobs, you are winning the smartphone war there is no doubt about it. What you need to remind yourself and I am sure you have, is that most of the humans on this planet can't currently afford your cool little gizmo. The first company to make a really cheap and useful smartphone I believe will be the bigger winner.
